About eleven years ago, Stephen Fry walked out of a West End play in which he was starring and disappeared, only to reappear a few days later in Belgium. At which point he was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder (manic depression). I suppose running away to Belgium of all place was a bit of a give-a-way.
In this two part documentary, Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of The Manic Depressive (BBC2), the comedian, actor, author and film-maker provides a compelling picture of the disorder. He talks frankly about his disappearance and even admits that he came close to suicide.
